Last fall, the Maroon Campus Band and I performed in a couple of concerts at the University of Minnesota with some people from our community who had intellectual and developmental disabilities. I found out that one of these individuals had played trumpet with his high school band, and another had sung with his high school choir. I began wondering: do special education teachers and music teachers collaborate during transition planning to promote playing or singing in community ensembles for their students who are interested in doing so?
To help provide a tool for such collaborations, Beth Nelson (HR in the Institute for Community Integration) and I worked on a website together. If you are interested in using or promoting this resource, it can be accessed here. We would like to get the word out about the site and expand the ensembles listed on the "For Musicians" page. If you are in or know of a community ensemble that might be interested, please contact us!
