Dr. Caroline Hand is Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Performance at Ball State University where she conducts the Symphony Band, directs the “Pride of Mid-America” Marching Band, oversees Ball State Athletic Bands, and teaches select courses in music education. Dr. Hand previously served as conductor and music director of the Maroon Campus Band at the University of Minnesota and was frequently featured as a guest conductor with the University’s Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. She also rehearsed and wrote drill for Minnesota’s athletic bands and conducted lectures in conducting classes. Outside of the University, Dr. Hand worked with the Medalist Concert Band (Bloomington, MN) and the Neoteric Chamber Winds, a Twin Cities based ensemble dedicated to performing rare repertoire for chamber winds.
Dr. Hand is an avid supporter of community engagement through music. Her current research, inspired by her brother, focuses on actively including people with intellectual disabilities in the music ensemble. She presented on the topic at both the Minnesota Music Educators Association 2015 Mid-Winter Clinic and the University of Minnesota’s Youth Issue Education Network Session and has an upcoming presentation with the College Music Society. Exploration of this topic has also given Dr. Hand the opportunity to travel and research abroad. In the summer of 2014, she was selected to participate in the annual international summit for New Audiences and Innovative Practices in Iceland.
Dr. Hand earned the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the University of Minnesota. Before moving to the Twin Cities, she received her Masters of Music in Band Conducting from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Prior to her time at Baylor, Dr. Hand taught secondary school band in Arkansas and Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Oklahoma State University. Her teachers include Craig Kirchhoff, Kathy Saltzman Romey, Eric Wilson, and Joseph Missal.
